The Cost, Sept 3, 2022

Luke 14:25-33, Pentecost 13C

Theme: Sacrifice

A five-year old child came to the store counter and asked for a candy bar. The cashier asked what kind. The child said, “One with chocolate and peanuts.”

The cashier offered a chocolate bar. “That will be one dollar and twenty-five cents.”

The child placed a fist full of pennies on the counter next to the bar. “Is this many enough?” The child asked.

The cashier carefully counted 19 cents. “This is not enough.” She said.

The child’s lower lip quivered and said, “Ok. What can I get for these?”

“I’m sorry, but we do not sell any candy for that much.” The cashier said. “Go and get more money and I will sell you some candy.”

“Ok,” said the child and took the coins.

“You need to learn to count your coins before you come back. You will need to have 125 of them instead of 19.” explained the cashier.

“I can’t count that high yet.” The child said with a bit of consternation.

“Then you first have to learn how to count.” Said the cashier.

When Jesus was teaching the crowds who were following him, he said, “Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’”

The promise of a new forever life is free, but the cost of receiving it is high. Jesus wants us to give our all. But like the child wanting a chocolate bar, we must know the cost. To do this, we must study God’s teachings. Then, knowing the cost, be willing to give it.

Worship with us in person at 10:30 AM as we will be meditating on what we must do to receive God’s gift of forever life. The service will also be streamed live on the internet -- (https://fccmaryvillemo.com) or on the church’s home Facebook page. If you miss the live stream, a recorded session is also available to view at your convenience. Want to make a comment on my blog? Click on https://fccmaryvillemosanc.wixsite.com/ftdo
