Proverbs 8.12-31, John 15.26-27
Pentecost 1C,
Theme: The Advocate
This next Sunday is traditionally called “Trinity Sunday.” The Holy Trinity is an interesting description of the Christian God. Christians believe in one God. It is the God of Abraham and Isaac and Moses. It is the same God described in the Torah. (The Torah refers to the first five books in the Old Testament in the Holy Bible.) The Torah is recognized by Christians, Jews and the people of Islam as Holy writings.
While Christians traditionally recognize the first Sunday after Pentecost as Trinity Sunday, I will be speaking to the specific nature of the third aspect of the Trinity – that of the Holy Spirit. For Christians, the Holy Spirit is manifested through the Church. Notice I capitalized the word ‘Church.’ When the word ‘church’ is capitalized, it is a kind of shorthand for the Church Universal – or all Christian denominations. These include the Disciples of Christ, the Roman Catholics, all the Easten Orthodox churches, the Coptic churches of Africa, and about 130 Protestant denominations. Yes, the Universal Church is divided. It is a literal curse on Christianity in general. The divisions are definitely NOT what Jesus had in mind as he gave His followers the instructions contained in this Sunday’s text.
In the text for this Sunday, we find a reference to the wisdom of God. Discerning the Wisdom of God is the beginning to discovering the significance of the Holy Spirit (God’s presence among us). Perhaps we should be wise to realize God’s guidance. It is good to be wise, but it is God’s wisdom which guides us to a better life.
Worship with us in person at 10:30 AM as we will be meditating on our praise as we receive praise from God. The service will also be streamed live on the internet -- (https://fccmaryvillemo.com) or on the church’s home Facebook page. If you miss the live stream, a recorded session is also available to view at your convenience. Want to make a comment on my blog? Click on https://fccmaryvillemosanc.wixsite.com/ftdo.
