Jeremiah 1.4-10, Pentecost 11C

Theme: Serving God

What is your purpose in life?

If you are a young person, you might be thinking about what you would like to do with your life.

If you are a person nearer to the end of your life you may be looking back at what you may or may not have accomplished.

If you are somewhere in between, you may be wondering what you are doing which is a significant contribution to the world.

The Old Testament book of Jeremiah is written by a prophet who lived in Judah. He was a person who, unlike many in his country, traveled to many other countries and kingdoms. He was well versed not only in the Hebrew culture, but also the cultures Egypt and Babylon. He knew about Juda’s political situation. It was a small kingdom caught between two powerhouses. The king would play one of those two countries against each other. Then Egypt’s military lost its prominence and the balance of power disappeared.

As a young man, Jeremiah knew about the breakdown of Egypt’s political influence. He felt as if God was calling him to speak up about it. In the text, he writes about how he experienced that call from God.

He says, ““Ah, Lord God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” In other words, he did not think he was prepared or worthy. Surly there would be someone older and more mature who could take on such a herculean task.

Maybe back in Jeremiah’s time people who heard voices were not considered crazy. But now days, how do we hear God calling us?

Does God speak to us as we witness injustice and suffering? Perhaps you yourself are experiencing those things. Do we feel powerless to do anything to change what is happening?

As Christians, we know what we need to do to help people. With God’s help, we can make a difference.

We need to know that we are called to serve.

Worship with us in person at 10:30 AM as we will be meditating on how we can become servants of God. The service will also be streamed live on the internet -- (https://fccmaryvillemo.com) or on the church’s home Facebook page. If you miss the live stream, a recorded session is also available to view at your convenience. Want to make a comment on my blog? Click on https://fccmaryvillemosanc.wixsite.com/ftdo
